[N]ew seismic research indicates that the Hayward and its neighboring fault, the Calaveras, might be connected underground to make them, in effect, a single and even more dangerous fault.
A research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park reported on the research during the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco on Tuesday. Evidence of creep and microquakes too tiny to be felt on both faults, said Russell Graymer, makes it appear that the Hayward and Calaveras are joined as a single fault less than four miles beneath the surface.
