Commuting and Perfume

Since moving to Livermore I've been driving my car to the train station to go to work.  I've found this to be stressful.  I get upset by the traffic, impatient by drivers going slower than I want to on the off ramp and getting in my way in the parking lot.  Plus it puts miles on the car, adds wear and tear to both me and the Corolla and uses up more of that expensive gasoline.  Then I have to pay $1 a day to park in the station lot as well.

Well, last week I decided to try riding my bike the 8 miles to the station.  I rode on Sunday but then we had rain again for a few days (It looks like that strange late wet weather has FINALLY gone away!).  Yesterday and today I rode though.  Instead of being stressed out from freeway driving I'm relaxed from a strenuous 45-50 minute aerobic workout on the way to the train, nice.  I'm going to be a fair weather rider though.  I have no intention of riding 45 minutes in a driving cold rain in the winter!  But hey, this is California so most days are good riding days.

A not so nice part of today's commute was the rotund massively over-perfumed lady who decided to sit next to me on the train.  I could smell her perfume the instant she entered the car, it preceded her actual arrival by several seconds.  Do these people buy perfume in 50 gallon barrels and bathe in it?  If I can smell you from over 15 feet away, you are wearing too much!  If I can enter a room you left 10 minutes ago and still identify who had been there, you are wearing too much!  You extreme perfume people need to get a clue!  Here is how you apply perfume.  You take a couple of DROPS and put it on your neck, that way you, who so obviously enjoy the smell, can smell it, along with anyone who snuggles with you, which is the point of the stuff I think.  Bring a small vial of it with you so you can reapply it during the day, again a drop or two only.  DON'T apply it as if it were sunscreen, PLEASE!  Many perfumes cause me get a headache and clog my sinuses.  Trust me, I don't need to smell you to know you are there, my eyes and ears work just fine.

Here is my bike route from Livermore to the Pleasanton BART station:

NBC anti-life?

I would boycott NBC, if I ever watched it that is. I actually never watch anything on the old line networks, NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX. Everything I watch is on the cable only stations... do they still broadcast over the air? Ah well, this story is about the fact that it seems NBC refused to air an ad put together by some Catholic outfit that features an embryo and all of the hardships it faced in early life ending up with the revelation that they were talking about Obama. Here is the ad , check it out and see how unoffensive it is. Like I said, if I watched them I'd quit now. :-/

Wikileaks and police state censorship

I saw an article today on SF Gate about some nit wit Bush appointed Federal Judge ordering a website I'd never heard of called Wikileaks shut down because they were publishing some bank documents from some corrupt Swiss bank. The amusing thing is that they can't actually do it! Even more amusing is that this just draws attention to the site and makes it that much more visible, yay idiot goons! :-) There are mirror sites all over the world and it's almost impossible for thuggish police state goons to figure out how to close off all of the leaks :-) One mirror site is here: http://wikileaks.be/wiki/Wikileaks The US site they tried to close down is still here: http://88.80.13.160 "Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But, conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe,...

Child Driven Education

Here is a Ted Talk with Sugata Mitra on Child Driven Education... very unschooling-like I think.  :-)  I've seen videos of him before, this is an update on his research on letting groups of kids learn on the internet, mostly without any supervision at all.  Posted via email from The Angry Gnome
